Thanksgiving Wishes Needed for 50 Kids and Families
GRAND RAPIDS, MI –During the month of November, D.A. Blodgett—St. John’s (DABSJ) is seeking the community’s help to grant 50 Thanksgiving Wishes. Thanksgiving Wishes is an annual drive where wishes are submitted on behalf of the children and families served by DABSJ. These are not a typical toy request like we see during the Christmas season. These wishes are items not covered by programs’ operating budgets, so the community’s generosity is needed. The wishes can provide an experience or better quality of life for a child or family.
GRAND RAPIDS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM SERVICE MEMBERSHIP: The Sisters in Support program pairs volunteer mentors with young moms and children. These mentors strive to provide age-appropriate opportunities for healthy play in order to teach about good parenting and child development. For $75 we can obtain a year-long service membership that will allow our mentors to take these moms and their children to the Children’s Museum multiple times for hours of fun and interaction.
ORTHODONTICS FOR FOSTER CHILD: Soon-to-be 18 year old female in Foster Care, who is in need of orthodontic work: There is a gap in her teeth, and she becomes very self-conscious when she smiles. She is embarrassed by the way she looks, and it is affecting her self-esteem development. Orthodontic work would also aid in this child's social skill development.
YOGA SUPPLIES & APPAREL: We have started offering a new yoga program for children who have experienced trauma. We would be grateful for a supply of yoga mats and yoga blocks for these trauma informed yoga classes offered to children ages 5-17. Athletic clothing appropriate for yoga would also be beneficial in various sizes
TUTOR FOR A SUDANESE MOM: Rayna is a young mom with three kids, ages 11, 5 and 9 months. Rayna speaks English well but has never had any formal education and cannot read or write. Rayna would love to have a mentor who could meet with her every week to help her with reading and writing. She finds it difficult to navigate through stores when she can’t read the signs. She would like to have someone to ask for advice about the best place to get things like school supplies and clothes for her kids. CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT THIS WISH
BUS PASS FOR WORKING MOM: Lily is a young mom with three kids ages 5, 3 and 2. Lily has been working hard taking extra shifts and trying to find a home for her and her kids. She has recently completed her CNA training. She doesn’t have a car and bus passes would enable her to save money for other expenses.
DIAPERS & WIPES: Many of the clients we serve struggle to obtain enough diapers for their children. Having a stock of diapers on hand would allow the agency to send mom home with diapers or supplement their needs. Multiple sizes would be great. Wipes are always helpful as well. - See more at: http://www.dabsj.org/2016-thanksgiving-wishes#sthash.tpt1IJbP.dpuf
Each year, over 2,000 children in Kent County suffer abuse and neglect. One of the goals at DABSJ is to provide children with a healthy, encouraging, and enriching home-life.
